Most times, Joesph Varley was lucky. He hit more green lights than red. He had never been struck by lightning, and his winning percentage for useless games of chance was well over sixty percent. Blessed with good luck most times, there’d be other times his luck could turn downright nasty.
Varley knew this was one of those times.
The vial of Black Death ruptured in his back pack while riding the street car. He had lost his footing during an abrupt stop and shifted into one of the greasy hand poles. He heard the crunch and knew that the tiny vial had just broken.
